Holding a Responsible Event
When set in the context of sustainability reporting obligations and the requirements of corporate sustainability programmes, organising congresses, meetings and company events in a sustainable way is becoming ever more important.
Bremen provides the ideal conditions for running your planned event in a responsible manner, with the additional benefit that it offers options for fringe activities that are high-quality, locally-based and authentic. Finding event venues, overnight accommodation and catering providers or providing support with attendee management or climate-protection are just a few of the issues that the Bremen Convention Bureau will be happy to advise on, to make your planned event responsible. We can put you in touch with a network of service providers in Bremen who will help you make the best possible preparations for your event and ensure it runs smoothly and successfully.
On this website, you’ll find inspiration and tips about how to organise your event in a responsible way, along with more information to help you get started with planning.
The Bremen Convention Bureau team will always provide expert, unbiased help and advice.
By having our own in-house sustainability management, we have the expertise needed to ensure that your event is responsible.
Thanks to our many years of experience, we can look back on many examples of events such as the 15th International Coral Reef Symposium, held in Bremen in 2022, which was awarded in the sustainability category at the Bremen and Bremerhaven Tourism Prize.
The GDS Index is a benchmarking tool for cities and regions that measures, evaluates, and promotes the sustainability of a tourist destination. Its methodology is based on international standards such as the UN SDGs, the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council), and UN Tourism. The assessment incorporates 76 criteria that measure urban sustainability efforts and strategies, social sustainability, the sustainability commitment of partners, and the sustainability performance of the Destination Management Organization (DMO). In 2025, the city of Bremen, through Bremen Tourism and the Bremen Convention Bureau, participated in the index for the first time.

Participation in the GDS Movement allows us to exchange ideas with other destinations and helps us identify and implement potential improvements.
Further details about Bremen's participation and results can be found in our GDSI Destination Profile.
Bremen will participate in the GDSI again in 2026.
Sustainable locations and catering
If you’re looking for a suitable place to hold your event, we’ll be happy to help and offer advice. We’ll take into account issues such as the time of year, the kind of technologies and decoration you have in mind, accessibility issues and the other service providers you might need to work with.
But let’s not forget that, if when people work hard, they also need to eat well. For this reason, we also have catering tips and recommendations on how to use resources responsibly whilst also providing attendees with tasty and interesting refreshments. Providing more vegan and vegetarian options can affect the eco-footprint of event catering just as positively as focussing on using seasonal produce that doesn't need to be transported very far. Using organically grown or fairly traded products can also make a contribution. Accurately calculating the number of portions required and recycling left-overs are also ways of conserving resources and reducing food waste. The targeted use of reusable solutions and the reduction of single-use plastic products can also be crucial levers.
To ensure nothing gets left to chance when it comes to the physical well-being of your guests, we’re happy to help you select the perfect local caterers for your event. We also have all the details you need if you’re looking for a vegan or vegetarian restaurant in Bremen.

Attendee management, service & advice
The Bremen Convention Bureau team will be delighted to help you plan and run your event, taking sustainability aspects into account. We can offer you digital participant management, exclusively work with local partners, do not generate any travel or accommodation expenses ourselves, assist in procuring suitable printed materials and name badges, and provide digital solutions for pre- and post-event follow-up.
Climate protection
With the slogan, “avoid, reduce, offset” in mind, we’ll be happy to advise you on how to plan and run your event to be as climate-friendly as possible.
We support you in planning and organizing your event to minimize CO2 emissions and to offset the emissions it does generate. To do this, we measure the CO2 emissions that will generated by your event, look for targeted ways of reducing them and then, finally, use recognised climate-protection projects to compensate for the emissions that were produced. To help us do this, we use empirical data such as the values gathered from the International Coral Reef Symposium 2022 – an event designed to be as climate-friendly as possible.
Tools such as the CO2 calculator for events from the Umwelt Bundesamt (German Environment Agency) or programmes run by offsetting providers such as atmosfair or myClimate which specialise in climate-friendly events, can be used.
